12Cr18Ni9Ti austenitic stainless steel (a material of the automatic control rod for WWR-K reactor active zone) irradiated to 5 dpa at 80°C and annealed at 450–950°C for 1 hr has been studied using TEM, magnetic properties and microhardness measurements. Evolution in fine structure of the irradiated steel resulting from heat treatment was identified (Frank loops and black dots) and it was compared to changes in magnetic properties. It was assumed that magnetism of austenitic steel is associated with Frank loops of certain size (15–20 nm) in which at a relatively low temperatures (≤300°С) and irradiation dozes (<20 dpa) the formation of ferromagnetic α-phase during ε→α-transformation may occur.

The results of studies on pitting corrosion of 12Cr18Ni10Ti stainless steel austenized after tensile testing at room and low (−20 and −60°C ) temperatures are given. It has been established that local corrosion resistance of cold-deformed stainless steel depends on strain and temperature which determine structure-phase state of material. It is shown that at low degrees of deformation dislocation substructure formed of quasi-homogeneous honeycomb type which has a stabilizing effect on the state of the steel, resulting in increase of resistance to corrosion. Large degree of plastic deformation (>30%) along with the formation processes of high fragmented inhomogeneous structure in 12Cr18Ni10Ti steel initiate phase transformation γ → α΄ to form α΄-martensite, which negatively affects the corrosion resistance of the material.

The comparative study has been performed on the post-operation changes in the structural-phase state, magnetization, swelling and corrosion properties of the samples of structural reactor steel 12Cr18Ni10Ti, cut from the walls of the hexagonal ducts of the spent fuel assemblies from various elevations from the core center of the nuclear reactor BN-350. The studies of the aging processes in the highly irradiated corrosion-resistant austenitic steel showed that as the result of isochronous annealing in the region of 400÷450 °C we can observe the effect of magnetization increase, initiation of the processes of nucleation of defects of various morphology, the changes in their density and size, which determines the degree of swelling. The relationship has been established between radiation swelling with evolution of the defective structure, density, magnetization and corrosion resistance of austenitic steel.

Experimental results on the relaxation of internal stresses in structural stainless steels Х18Н9Т, 12Х18Н10Т and AISI 316 after neutron irradiation, effects of stationary or pulsed electrons of various powers are presented. It has been established that in steels irradiated with low neutron fluxes (1016 ÷ 1018 n/cm2 ), the deformation by extension as a result of relaxation phenomena is the martensitic γ → α transition begins at lower values of critical stresses than after austenization. At the same time, there is an anomalous effect of reducing the yield strength and reducing the amount of mechanical work expended on the destruction of the steel sample. The features of the relaxation of internal stresses and the formation of the α-phase in stainless steels under irradiation with electrons of various energies are revealed. It is shown that the radiation relaxation of internal stresses caused by the action of neutrons, pulsed or stationary electrons, changing the conditions for the formation of the α-phase, determines the level of mechanical and corrosion properties of irradiated stainless steel.

There were given and analyzed results of physical and mechanical testing of flat samples from Cr18Ni9 (AISI 304) reactor steel which was heat-treated at T=900 °C and 1050 °C and then irradiated with neutrons (WWR-K) to the fluence of 9·1019 n/cm2 and tensile tested at temperatures from 20 to −100 °C followed by magnetization measurements.

The results of the studies of thermal aging effect on corrosion resistance of stainless reactor steel 12Cr18Ni10Ti in unirradiated and neutrons irradiated states have been presented in the paper. The tendency to intergranular corrosion increase with the increase of neutron exposure dose was revealed. A significant reduction in the maximum failure strain and the appearance of the martensite phase was observed during steel testing for corrosion cracking. The maximum content of the martensite phase is formed in the samples aged at 650 °C due to high diffusion mobility of the alloying elements and development of the sensitization process.

This research examines mechanical properties and microstructural changes of EP-450 steel implanted with He. Steel samples were uniformly implanted with He+2 ions (40 MeV) to concentrations of 240 appm and 44 appm at 100 °С and 400 °С using U-150M isochronous cyclotron. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed at 25 °С, 400 °С and 800 °С. It was shown that at 100 °С mechanical characteristics of non-irradiated and irradiated EP-450 steel are less sensitive to temperature increase up to 400 °С. Steel samples irradiated at 400 °С show a decrease in strain hardening. Plasticity of the irradiated samples decreases at tensile temperatures 25 °С and 400 °С and almost independent on He concentration. High-temperature deformation of the irradiated material leads to similar plasticity as that for non-irradiated material which indicates that high temperature He embrittlement does not present in EP-450 steel at given conditions.
