Сравнительно быстро было показано, что удаление атомов и молекул с поверхности при облучении слаботочными пучками ускоренных ионов с энергиями 102–104 эВ происходит в результате парных столкновений быстрых частиц с атомами вещества, т.е. так называемого столкновительного распыления. Мюоны космических лучей тоже являются высокоэнергетическими заряженными частицами и, следовательно, есть вероятность, что они тоже могут разрушить структуру твердых тел при попадании. Именно это свойство мюонов привело на мысль, что их можно использовать для прогноза и мониторинга землетрясении в сейсмически активных зонах. Мюоны при прохождении в земной каре порождают широкий атмосферный ливень (ШАЛ) и частицы ШАЛ при взаимодействии с атомами определенныхтпород могут разрушит их структуру и в результате это разрушение (трещины) сопровождаетсят акустическимит эффектами.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The study of radiation erosion began in the 50–70 s of the last century. It was relatively quickly shown that the removal of atoms and molecules from the surface when irradiated with low-current beams of accelerated ions with energies of 102–104 eV occurs as a result of pairwise collisions of fast particles with atoms of matter, i.e. so-called collision spraying. Cosmic ray muons are also high-energy charged particles, and therefore there is a possibility that they, too, can destroy the structure of solids when hit. It is this property of muons that suggested that they can be used to predict and monitor earthquakes in seismically active zones.
